Did Mohammad perform any miracles

Did Mohammad perform any miracles?
Our Muslim friends often claim that Mohammad, like the prophets before him, performed miracles. This substantiates his claims of prophet hood. Let us examine this position.

Firstly, we need to ask, what good evidence do Muslims have to prove this?. They will tell us that such reports are mentioned in the Qur'an. One such is found in Sura 54 which says:

1 The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has been cleft asunder.
According to Islamic literature, this verse refers to event when the Prophet allegedly split in moon in half, which is a great miracle.

However, there are some problems with this argument:

1) The verse only says "the moon is cleft asunder" and it provides no details. We have to go outside the Qur'an to find out what this is referring to. Why is this significant?. Because the same Qur'an goes to great lengths to describe the miracles of Moses, Jesus et cetera in clear wording. So why would God not describe the miracles of His greatest prophet in His Book?. This is puzzling.

It can be suggested that by not mentioning the miracles of the Prophet, it was ensured that the Qur'an did not become a Book which praises him, rather, it's main focus is Allah Himself.

But as good as this argument sounds, it is refuted by the Qur'an itself. Because the Qur'an does, more than once, praise the Prophet and gives him special favours. Some examples are as follows:

And in some parts of the night (also) offer the Salat (prayer) with it (i. e. recite the Qur'an in the prayer) , as an additional prayer (Tahajjud optional prayer Nawafil) for you (O Muhammad SAW) . It may be that your Lord will raise you toMaqaman Mahmuda (a station of praise and glory, i. e. the highest degree in Paradise!) . 17:79

Other examples would include Surah 33:50 & 56.

2) Another problem is that this report was not recorded by the non-Muslims of that time. If a miracle of such magnitude actually happened, why didn't any one report this apart from Muslims, as the moon is seen throughout the world and definitely, many people would have seen this?. But we do not find any such mention.

Muslims can respond by asking that are the miracles of Moses or Jesus reported by non-Believers?. But again, this argument also fails.

Firstly, because the miracles of Moses and Jesus were accepted as fact by Mohammad himself and are recorded in Qur'an. Thus, Muslims cannot question this.

Secondly, even if the Muslims choose to question these miracles, remember, the miracles of the previous prophets were not the same as the Muslims are ascribing to Mohammad. Mohammad's alleged miracle involved something that the whole world can see, it was not like the parting of the Red Sea or raising the dead. When the red sea was parted, only two parties saw it, the Israelites and the Egyptians. The Egyptians died, that means only the Israelites survived and they did record that event in their books. And, as I said before, this is something that is accepted by Islam.

But here is something really interesting. Even though Jesus's miracles or the super natural elements of His ministry were not like the splitting of the moon (i. e, to be seen by everyone) , we do find the reports in non-Christian sources!

Josephus, the 1st century Jewish historian, among other things reported that Jesus was a doer of wonderful works"Antiquities"18:3:3

Thallus, a Greek historian in about AD 52 talked about darkness in Judea and the surrounding areas.

This quotation was quoted by Julius Africanus and it coincides with the reports found in the New Testament that how darkness covered the whole land at the time of the crucifixion of Jesus (Luke 23:44-45) . Thallus also mentioned about a "earthquakes" which again match with the Biblical accounts (Matthew 27:51-52) .

Finally, the Jewish Talmud states "He is going forth to be stoned because he has practiced sorcery and enticed Israel to apostasy. (The Babylonian Talmud, transl. by I. Epstein (London: Soncino, 1935) , vol. III, Sanhedrin 43a)
One can easily concur what "Sorcery" means. According to Muslim commentators, this was the same response of the Quraysh after Mohammad performed this feat (54:2) .

So, we can see that Jesus's miracles, although not of the same nature as Mohammad's supposed miracle, are attested by non-Christian writings. But there is no such proof for this miracle of Mohammad.

3) Even if we reject both the arguments given above, we have to remember that what we are relying on is the Islamic literature itself. The Qur'an, though for Muslims is the Word of God, for non-Muslims, it is of purely human origin. Hence, we cannot accept it's own testimony in favor of the Prophet who allegedly received the Revelation. We need additional supportive evidence to accept these claims.

4) Perhaps the most problematic issue in this claim is the fact that the Qur'an itself hints Mohammad was unable to perform any miracles!. Consider the following statements:

They also say,  'Why has no sign been sent down upon him from his Lord?' Say: 'Surely God is able to send down a sign, but most of them know not. ' 6:37

And they say: "Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord? Say: "The signs are only with Allah, and I am only a plain warner. " 29:50
Read also Surah 17:90-95

Therefore, keeping these verses in mind, we can not even accept the testimony of the Qur'an in Sura 54:1, as it is contradictory to verses quoted above.

All these arguments give a strong case that Mohammad, unlike previous messengers, was unable to perform any miracle.

I would like to end this post by quoting one verse from the Bible. Jesus said:

22 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive,  if possible, even the elect. Mark 13
What this means is, even if accept that the Prophet of Islam performed miracles (though there strong proof to prove otherwise) , it still does not qualify him to be a true prophet of God.

Hence, the claims of Mohammad performing miracles to substantiate his prophet hood are not built upon solid foundations.

God Bless You.
