Sign of Jonah

Matthew 12.39-40.
"An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth".

The fact was that the prophecy He had made was that He would be like Jonah - and we are told that He was unlike Jonah. He didn't fulfill. Jonah is alive, Jesus is dead. (Ahmed Deedat)

Jesus said there is no any other sign but only the sign of Jonah. So the anti Christianity scholars misinterpret this topic and raised the argument that this prophecy was not fulfilled by Jesus. Because, when Jonah was in the belly of fish, he was alive and Jesus was dead when he was in the tomb. So Jesus was not dead, he was alive as per the sign of Jonah. Islam is not agree with the death of Jesus Christ. That’s why they misinterpret the sign of Jonah to prove that Jesus was alive, and Jesus was never dead.

If Jesus really wanted to alive in the tomb, He supposed to be use “For as Jonah was ALIVE three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so shall the Son of man be ALIVE three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” doesn’t make sense?

Jesus said very simple language, As Jonah was,… Son of man be…. But this is how people misinterpret The Bible and deceive our people. In this verse Jesus clearly used the time factor, three days and three nights.

Let’s check another words of Jesus which make these issue clear.

John 3.14
As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up.

In this verse Jesus compared himself to being lifted up. If we apply the same case as applied for Jonah, Jesus would be a serpent. Was He? NO. Jesus was talking about how He will lifted up to save humans, as Moses lifted up a brass serpent to save Israel.

Another arguments for three days and three nights occurred by Ahmed Deedat.
He argued that Jesus said ‘Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth’. But He was dead on Friday (night). Saturday (day and night), still He was in the grave. Sunday (morning), the tomb was empty. It means there are not three days and three nights but only one day and two nights.

When we start to read 1st century document, we can’t not use 21st century terminology. 1st century calendar and system for days and nights were different than 21st century.

In the old time of Hebrew, the time of 1st century, new day was started from 6pm. The time (any moment) before 6pm, it was counted the whole day and night.

Jesus was laid to the tomb Friday afternoon, This is count one day and one night.

At 6pm on Friday to 6pm Saturday. This is count 2nd day and 2nd night.

after 6pm on Saturday to 6pm Sunday. Jesus rose on Sunday morning. This is count 3rd day and 3rd night.

In this century we use to say “I am going out for three days or three nights”, we never use to say that “I am going out for three days and three nights”. But in the Old Testament, people counted days and night. In Hebrew speech always have the same numbers for days and nights.

Exodus 24:18
Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

Jonah 1.17
Jonah was in the whale three days and three nights.

Job 2:13
And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great

In the ancient time anyone want to speak about three days which enclosed only 2 nights, he has to speak three days and 3 nights.

Esther 4:16
16 “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”

Fast was ended when only 2 nights were passed.

This is the best example, how Jews counted days and nights.
